Darien Lakes State Park

You can start a fire without matches by eating Mexican food, then
breathing on a pile of dry sticks.

Conservation Trail, March 1998

Darien Lakes State Park should not be confused with the amusement park that shares its name. This 1800+ acre park has over 18 miles of wooded multi-purpose trails for hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and hunting.

On March 29, 1998 we hiked a 4 mile section of the Conservation Trail, which is maintained by the Foothills Trail Club.

The trail begins in a wooded, hilly section near a small creek.

Sections of the trail were extremely muddy. In some areas, the mud came above our boots. We came to one creek that was impassable for Sadie -- she sank up to her belly. We decided to cut off the trail and return by way of a gravel road.
