Chenango Valley State Park

Sherlock Holmes and Matthew Watson were on a camping and hiking trip. They had gone to bed and were lying there looking up at the sky. Holmes said, "Watson, look up. What do you see? "Well, I see thousands of stars." "And what does that mean to you?" "Well, I guess it means we will have another nice day tomorrow. What does it mean to you, Holmes?" "To me, it means someone has stolen our tent."

Broome County, New York, 1998. Chenango Lake Trail

For a quiet getaway on Memorial Day Weekend 1998, we decided to camp in remote Chenango Valley State Park. Surrounded by nothing but trees, lakes and rolling hills, this small 1000 acre park in Broome County was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Buffalo.

There are a few short trails in the park, the largest being only 2 miles. Choices of trails include walking through a bog, across a glacial ridge, and a self-guided nature trail. We chose the Chenango Lake Trail, which circles the kettle lake seen above. Campers and visitors can take advantage of the canoe rentals offered by the park.

The beaver population is very active in this park! We noticed chew marks on most of the trees along the water's edge.

The lush foliage offered great protection against the hot sun.

Nevertheless, Sadie decided to go for a swim! Notice how clear the water is.
