The Zoar Valley is surprisingly not widely known in Western New York, in spite of its boasting a nature sanctuary and white water rafting trips.  Interesting features to see in its 3,000+ acres include canyons, many waterfalls, and natural fed springs.

We have only hiked two areas of the Zoar Valley, and plan to spend more time this summer exploring. Bring plenty of mosquito repellant unless you want to get eaten alive!

Some of these photos are views from Point Peter and others are from Lookout Point off of Valentine Flats Road.

Deer Lick Nature Sanctuary is a popular section, just south of Gowanda NY. About 400 acres of forests and meadows, there are five formal trails, from 1 to about 3 miles long, so it is great for kids too.

Location of Deer Lick: Point Peter Rd in Gowanda, NY.

Directions: From Buffalo, take route 62 South to Gowanda. Turn east onto Water Street, which turns into Broadway. At the top of the hill, turn left onto Point Peter Road. Turn left onto Valentine Flats Road. Park at the end of this road.
